Irell Adds IP Lawyer Jonathan Lindsay

10.28.2019

Irell & Manella LLP announced today that patent attorney Jonathan Lindsay is returning to the firm’s Orange County office as a member of the Intellectual Property practice group. Jonathan handles a broad range of IP services for technology clients in industries including computer software and hardware, medical devices, wireless communications, and other electrical and electromechanical fields.

“We are very excited to welcome Jonathan back to the firm,” said Ben Hattenbach, a member of Irell’s management committee. “Jonathan exemplifies what we look for, both culturally and in terms of his capabilities as a lawyer, making him an ideal addition to the firm. His significant patent prosecution and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office experience will bolster our already preeminent patent litigation and patent office trial practices.”

Jonathan's practice will focus on strategic patent prosecution, post grant proceedings, patent portfolio management and litigation support. His practice also extends to all facets of patent procurement and the management of patent portfolios, both domestically and abroad, for a wide range of clients. In addition, he handles technology transactions, including IP license agreements and technology development and distribution agreements, and conducts IP due diligence in regard to corporate acquisitions and financings. He also advises companies on IP protection and litigation strategies in the context of emerging technologies, including autonomous vehicles, internet-of-things, artificial intelligence and distributed-ledger technology.

“I am thrilled to be returning home to Irell, where I first began my career,” said Jonathan. “Irell’s prominent intellectual property practice and commitment to excellence provide an ideal environment for elevating one’s patent practice to the highest of levels. I look forward to bringing to bear my experience and background to help the firm’s clients with their most important patent-related matters.”

Jonathan earned his J.D. at Harvard Law School, where he was an editor for the Harvard Journal of Law and Technology and served as a teaching fellow for the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society. He graduated summa cum laude from the University of Florida with his B.S. in Engineering. Jonathan began his career as an associate at Irell.

Irell’s patent litigators have handled hundreds of proceedings in all areas before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) since the passage of the America Invents Act (AIA). The firm’s Patent Office Trial practice includes Michael Fleming, the former chief administrative patent judge of the PTAB, which handles many of the proceedings established by the AIA. As chief judge, he was instrumental in drafting the post-grant provisions of the AIA and played a critical role in the creation of the IPR statute, for which he was recognized as an “Intellectual Property Trailblazer” by a national legal publication. Many of Irell's partners bring substantial professional experience working in the technology industry, as well as advanced technical degrees in areas such as computer engineering, computer science, chemical engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, inorganic chemistry, physics, materials science, molecular pharmacology and pharmacy.
