Morgan Chu Named 2012 IP MVP by Law360
Law360 has selected Morgan Chu as one of 10 MVPs in the area of intellectual property. The honorees are attorneys whose achievements in major litigation or transactions between October 2011 and October 2012 have set a new standard for accomplishment in corporate law.
Chu was recognized for the two mega-settlements he secured in the past year for TiVo with Verizon and AT&T, just before separate trials over TiVo's DVR patents were set to begin. In January, AT&T agreed to pay TiVo $215 million plus future royalties, while in September, Verizon settled for $250 million and future royalties, bringing the total amount Chu's work has resulted for TiVo to more than $1 billion.
Law360 also spotlighted Chu's $27.1 million win—the largest jury verdict ever in any area of law in the Western District of Arkansas—on behalf of St. Jude Medical in its patent suit against Access Closure Inc.
The editors noted a big defense win with a jury verdict in Linear Technology Corp. v. Novellus Systems Inc., followed by awards of attorneys’ fees for defendant Novellus of more than $5 million at the trial level and on appeal, with the California Supreme Court allowing the trial and appellate court decisions to stand.
